Having written about the Australian Christmas Carols in my last posting, and the interest created, I feel that I must confess that the vast majority of people in Australia don't even know they exist. These carols are rarely played on radio, or sung at Carols by Candelight services, or in any other context. You will hear the dreaded "Frosty the Snowman" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" far more often than you will hear any of the carols I wrote about. I'm not sure why this is so.
Most of the carols have a light, lilting melody, very evocative of the summer season, yet there seems to be a reluctance to include them in regular Christmas programs.
I wish I knew how to download the music to the computer so that you could listen to them.
Alice I have Australian Jingle Bells and The Three Drovers on my blog where you can click and hear the music. Thanks for letting me know about your carols. I have had fun this afternoon searching for more of your Christmas Carols
ReplyDeleteMaybe Australian's don't play them as often because secretly "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas."
ReplyDeleteOh, and what about 'Six white boomers'!!! Can't forget that one, we used to sing it at our final year school concerts as kids. I always loved that one.
ReplyDeleteAnd right now I'm definitely dreaming of a white christmas - it's just too damn hot today! *whinge and whine*
Stuart and Shell - you don't really want a 'White Christmas' do you? It's cold and it's wet. But come to think of it, it is nice for a change.
ReplyDeleteI didn't include 'Six White Boomers' and the Oz. versions of Jingle Bells, 12 Days of Christmas and whatever else we've managed to mutilate, as I was really thinking of 'Carols' rather than 'Songs'.
Frosty the Snowman in the summertime? I can understand Rudolph, as he surely visits Australia! Thanks again for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour own Australian Christmas Carols are most definitely going much better together with your summer season. I wonder how you can bear to hear the Winter Carols like Frosty & Co. during your hot Summer weather.
ReplyDeleteSays a real Carol he he ;-)
I wonder why these aren't played more at our Schools and at the shops and radio ?? I think it's a shame.
ReplyDeleteAlice, there is a station that you don't have to download or anything, it is free, I learned from it from blogger friend Jenn (IslandArtist) and it is AccuRadio .....type that in search and it should come up...it has a AccuHolidays....click on that and they play all different kinds of holiday music....
ReplyDeleteYes, Judy - I had been listening to some of those stations which I found through the Windows Media Player, but I wanted to actually add the tunes for the Aussie carols to my blog, but that was far too technically challenging for me!
ReplyDeleteAre you the Alice that wrote the Carol on Peggy's sight.....if you are, it's is wonderful.....
ReplyDeleteJudy - how I wish I had written the words for that Carol on Peggy's site. Actually, when I read her posting I thought, "Now people might think I actually composed the words", when what Peggy really meant was that I had written down the words of a number of carols on my blog, I didn't compose them. Sorry to have to disillusion you, Judy.
ReplyDeleteMusic is way to hard for me to Alice - look at the last disaster I had when trying to put it on my blog. Surely there must be a easy way to do it.
ReplyDeletePS I love the old carols, but if I hear Frosty the Snowman one more time I may melt him with a blow torch!!!
