Although my mother was not the author of this verse, she felt the power of its message and had taken the time to write it out for me. I was thrilled to find this little verse, written in Mum's lovely handwriting. I will take better care of it in the future - this special reminder of my dear Mother who passed away almost 23 years ago.
The Little Things
It really is the little things
That mean the most of all...
The "Let me help you with that" things
That may seem very small;
The "I'll be glad to do it" things
That make your cares much lighter;
The "Laugh with me, it's funny" things
That make your outlook brighter...
The "Never mind the trouble" things,
The "Yes", I understand;
The interest and encouragement
In everything you've planned.
It really is the little things,
The friendly word or smile,
That add such happiness to life
And make it more worthwhile.
Classic words, thanks!
ReplyDeleteA little thing like clicking on the blog of a 'friend' and finding this message that has come down through time. I wonder what your mum would think of blogging!
Have a great day!

How wonderful. My Mum wrote things out like that- we found them tucked here & there after she had gone.
ReplyDeleteLovely memories for you.
Ah, there it is again, that word "handwriting". And it would be "lovely handwriting" too, as people of our mothers' eras still wrote beautifully. How wonderful that you have this physical reminder of your mother, sweet(!) Alice. My mother and I have corresponded for years now by email, and although I've printed many messages out, usually on used paper :(
ReplyDeleteI've often thought that this is not the ideal way to preserve our relationship through the years.
I think I will use your post as a catalyst for me to do something I've been thinking of doing for a while: making a special card of lovely paper with extra pages in it, writing something to her, and asking her to write a message on the next page and send it back to me. Our messages to each other would fly back and forth across the Pacific, and ultimately there would be something physical and artistic left behind as a keepsake.
Thanks for your post!
Oh how nice to have that from my Grandma!!! She really was a special lady.
ReplyDeleteOh, you lucky duck, to find such a treasure. I would give anything to find something from my mother, of dear memory, who passed from this world in 1993.
ReplyDeleteYou should encase this treasure for posterity because what she's saying is so meaningful and lovely. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hope you got your painting done. I would have, through my tears if I had found this beauty in my house.
Hi Alice, just passing through, adding my blogroll to the blog-readers. Had to stop and say, this is lovely, and a lovely find - did you happen to need the message just now? I find that happens sometimes...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem your mum wrote down for you all those years ago. Such wise words! What a lovely thing to find when you removed the bedroom furniture, Alice! Put it somewhere safe, perhaps frame it?
ReplyDeleteTo find a long-lost poem written out for you by your mum would certainly brighten up any day. I'm glad you had this sweet and cheerful reminder of you mum today Alice.
ReplyDelete"A spoonful of sugar" so to speak :)
I hope the painting is going well, or better yet, finished!
I love Val's idea!
Have a lovely weekend!
We're in the midst of another snow storm!
I bet that faded old scrap of paper is an absolute treasure to you, Alice. What a wonderful choice of a poem your mother made. Perhaps you were always destined to find it just about now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful thing to find. I bet you will treasure it always. The words are so special, and oh-so-true.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Take care, Meow
