"My, my, that's a BIG world out there!"

At least one of the Crimson Rosella chicks has had a good look at the world today from the safety of 'home'. On two or three occasions a chick would sit halfway out of the birdhouse, surveying the world, whilst the parents sat in the tree within easy reach. We expect them to venture out of the box in the next day or two - whether it's by design or accident, who knows? We're almost certain there are only two live chicks as we can only hear two of them chirping.
A wattle bird has been a mite too inquisitive lately, flying in very close to the box and annoying the parent birds. We're not sure if it will be a danger to the chicks. Our big concern is a stray cat who thinks it has visiting rights; fortunately it has a bell, which we can hear if we're in the vicinity.

  1. Oh no, that's sad that one chick has died.

Lovely, though, to hear the ongoing story of the two surviving chicks ..... that photo is so cute with the little feathered head poking out!

  2. What a lovely snapshot of your young chick, looking around out of his "home". Soon the birds will be gone I guess and...perhaps a new generation will come! I hope the cat is only around when you are outside too!!!

  3. Hello Alice ~~ ow good it has been to watch the baby birds, for you and for us through your blog. A big world ahead of them. Isn't nature wonderful how in the case of birds, they know how to fly. We hope. I enjoyed your photos of Bright and Mt. Buffalo. Bright is a very pretty town and it is amazing how the burnt areas on the mountains regenerate. Glad you liked
my sweet peas and pelargoniums. They have been lovely this year.
Take care, my friend, Love, Merle.

  4. Well, look at that! Almost ready for the big, wide world!
so sad about the one little chic. Sure hope the other 2 are lucky enough to survive the stray cat, and that you'll be around to police the action when necessary. It's a dangerous world for little birdies!
Lovely pictures of the cute little chicky :)

Great to see the young getting ready to fly out. It's a shame there are so many predators waiting to pounce!

  7. My goodness they have grown. How sad one may have died, but I guess that's life or should I say nature. It's been fascinating watching their development - thank you for sharing the photos of their life so far.

  8. Such an adventure seeing these little chicks develop. Seems sad, if one has died, but that is nature I guess. Hope they survive other predators.

  9. How blessed you are to have them choose to nest so close... and how blessed we are to have you share them with us. I had never even heard of a 'rosella'. Amazing colors.

  10. Such beautiful birds and what a privilege to watch then develop and grow in their nesting box. Here’s hoping that survive the predators. As Kerri rightly said, its a dangerous world out there for young birds. Marion
