Binalong

Not too much blogging being done at the moment as we are enjoying spending time with our cousins from England. On Monday we visited a few places in New South Wales, including the tiny town of Binalong, about an hour's drive from Canberra. Although many years past its heyday, Binalong has some interesting buildings and also the grave of one of our famous bushrangers, John Gilbert.

Typical cottage with wrought-iron lacework around the verandah.

The General Store, built in 1909.

Another typical building of a century ago, a hotel with wide, shady verandah and corrugated iron roof.

Binalong Garage with petrol bowsers out the front.

Main street.

Wheat silos.

A common scene from yesteryear when cattle were driven on foot in search of feed or to market. Unfortunately, due to the drought, it's becoming a not unusual sight today. Though I think the 'drover' with the horse and buggy is something of an exception.

Historic steam engine and eucalypt tree.

Hi Alice! Glad you are enjoying your company. What a neat little town, like going back in time.

I wanted to tell you that we watched a movie about Australia the other day - The Dish - about the 1969 Apollo Moon Landing and the folks at the Parkes Observatory in Australia. I don't know how accurate it was, but it was very interesting.

Love your pictures! Thanks for sharing!

Hey, Alice. What a "cute" little historic town. I very much enjoyed seeing your pictures. The first house reminds me of a house we saw in an Australian movie we recently watched on the TV (I'm having a senior moment and can't remember the name).

I hope you are having a grand time with your visitors from England and they are enjoying the countryside. Thanks for sharing with us.

I love that general store - a sweet old building.

That sounds like a great little spot to take visitors...and beautiful weather, too, by the looks.

Hope you've had a happy weekend :)

I've always loved the names of the places in Australia!! Binalong certainly looks like a quaint little town and I so loved all the pictures! Looks like the weather was perfect too, look at that blue sky! I woke up to a winter wonderland this morning...ugh, much too early for such a snowfall, even for around here!!

Thanks for the little tour. I was just saying that I've become quite the armchair traveler. I love the places you show us that a travel agent would never recommend! I've always wanted to travel to Australia but my list of "must sees" is ever changing.

If I came to visit that is exactly the sort of scene I would hope to come across. Excellent photos that capture the flavour of the place. It looks, to my eyes, searingly hot. What was the temperature like? I am quite envious of you coasting into summer but trying to enjoy the autumn. (its a bit grey right now)

Ah, I see Blogger is letting me post comments tonight Alice, so here I am! Binalong is a quaint little Aussie country town. It makes me nostalgic to see the old Aussie style of verandah and buildings, and the countryside. The sky is such a brilliant blue!
It all looks so dry. You wouldn't believe the rain we're getting here!
I'm glad you're having a lovely time with your cousins Alice :)

Absolutely fascinating. I love small towns too. There are many with wuaint names here, too...although I think you have far more than we do. I love how everyone knows everyone and cares like a big family. My favorite small town in Massachusetts sadly has turned into a tourist 'destination'. I'm thankful not to be watching the major changes that must be taking place. I love seeing your pictures.. that lack of bark of the Eucalypt tree is beautiful.
